WASHINGTON D.C. (BuzzReport) – Senator Thom Tillis, R-N.C., declared on Sunday that he will not seek re-election for a third term in the U.S. Senate, a decision he stated was driven by a desire to spend more time with his family and a growing disillusionment with the entrenched partisanship and “political theatre” of Washington. The announcement comes just a day after Tillis cast a deciding vote against advancing a significant domestic policy bill championed by former President Donald Trump.

In a candid and lengthy statement released to the public, the two-term Republican senator did not mince words regarding his motivation. “As many of my colleagues have noticed over the last year, and at times even joked about, I haven’t exactly been excited about running for another term,” Tillis stated directly. He elaborated on the stark choice he faced: “That is true since the choice is between spending another six years navigating the political theatre and partisan gridlock in Washington or spending that time with the love of my life Susan, our two children, three beautiful grandchildren, and the rest of our extended family back home. It’s not a hard choice, and I will not be seeking re-election.”

Tillis’s departure from the Senate bench will undoubtedly shake up North Carolina’s political landscape. His seat in the critical battleground state was already a prime target for Democrats in the upcoming 2026 midterm elections, anticipating a fierce contest for control of the Senate.

The timing of Tillis’s announcement has drawn significant attention, occurring mere days after his crucial vote against the Republican domestic policy package. This opposition drew a sharp rebuke from former President Donald Trump, who took to his social media platform, Truth Social, to voice his displeasure. “Thom Tillis is making a BIG MISTAKE for America, and the Wonderful People of North Carolina!” Trump posted, hinting at potential support for primary challengers seeking to oust the incumbent senator.

While the former president’s reaction underscores the political pressure within the Republican party, Senator Tillis’s statement emphasizes a personal reckoning with the demanding and often acrimonious environment of the nation’s capital. His decision signals a clear prioritization of family life over continued engagement in the often-contentious legislative arena, leaving an open question mark over the future of his North Carolina seat.
