Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – A Florida father is behind bars after being charged with aggravated manslaughter and child neglect in connection with the death of his 18-month-old son, Sebastian, who was allegedly left unattended in a hot truck for over three hours. Scott Allen Gardner, 33, was arrested Thursday with the assistance of the Ormond Beach Police Department, according to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office. The tragic incident occurred on June 6th, when temperatures soared, turning Gardner’s vehicle into a deadly oven. Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood stated that Gardner is accused of leaving his son “helpless” while he allegedly went for a haircut and then spent time drinking at Hanky Panky’s Lounge. “This is a devastating case of negligence that cost a young child his life,” Sheriff Chitwood said in a statement. “Leaving a child in a hot car, particularly for that length of time, is unconscionable.” The investigation revealed a disturbing series of inconsistencies. Deputies reported that Gardner provided multiple false accounts of his activities on the day of Sebastian’s death. This alleged attempt to conceal the truth fueled the investigation and ultimately led to his arrest. First responders who arrived on the scene were met with a horrifying discovery. According to the sheriff’s office, medical personnel estimated that Sebastian’s body temperature reached a staggering 111 degrees Fahrenheit while trapped inside the vehicle. A police officer attempted to revive the toddler, but tragically, his efforts were unsuccessful. Gardner was apprehended at his mother’s home in Ormond Beach. He is now facing serious charges that could result in significant prison time. The investigation into Sebastian’s death is ongoing.
