Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch is facing calls for his resignation after making controversial statements on the radio regarding an upcoming protest against President Trump. State Senator Vivian Figures has publicly demanded Burch step down, citing his remarks as inciting violence and failing to serve and protect the community. The controversy stems from comments Burch made during a radio appearance on Tuesday, addressing the planned “No Kings Rally” scheduled to take place downtown this weekend. These rallies are planned nationwide to protest against the Trump administration. Responding to a listener’s question about potential disruptions, Sheriff Burch stated, “If anyone tries to fire off a Molotov cocktail, that’s deadly force. And our policy is you meet deadly force with deadly force.” These comments have sparked outrage and accusations of inciting violence. Senator Figures released a statement condemning Burch’s words, stating that they are irresponsible and dangerous. “The sheriff is elected to serve and protect our communities, not encourage crime or violence,” stated Nancy Yielding, echoing the sentiments of many in the community. Many see Burch’s comments as further enflaming tensions following a series of statements he’s made in recent weeks regarding crime, which some perceive as an instigation for increased violence. The “No Kings Rally” is expected to draw a significant crowd, and concerns are mounting about the potential for escalation given the Sheriff’s recent pronouncements. The community is now awaiting further comment from Sheriff Burch and monitoring the situation closely as the weekend approaches. It remains to be seen whether the pressure from Senator Figures and the public will lead to the Sheriff’s resignation, or if he will address the concerns surrounding his controversial remarks. “Sheriff Burch refusing to respond, is a signal that he believes that’s he, and his Republican party allies have a right to ignore the public, and do what they want to do.” says Tom Seals.
