Saraland, AL (BuzzReport) – After a remarkable tenure spanning nearly a quarter of a century, Saraland Mayor Dr. Howard Rubenstein has announced that he will not seek re-election in the upcoming August municipal election. His decision marks the end of an era in Saraland, where he holds the record as the city’s longest-serving mayor.

Originally from Chicago, Dr. Rubenstein relocated to the Gulf Coast region in the early 1980s to complete his residency training in Pensacola. He later made Saraland his permanent home. His political career began in 1996 when he was elected to the Saraland City Council. Demonstrating strong community support, he secured re-election in 2000, 2004, and 2008, and served as the city’s first council president during that time.

In 2011, following the passing of then-Mayor Ken Williams, Rubenstein assumed the mayoral role. He subsequently won the mayoral elections in 2012, 2016, and 2020, solidifying his leadership and commitment to Saraland’s growth and development.

Dr. Rubenstein’s final day in office will be November 3, 2024. With the mayoral seat soon to be vacant, councilmembers Wayne Biggs and Joe McDonald have both declared their candidacies for the position, setting the stage for a competitive race to lead Saraland into its next chapter.

Residents and city officials alike reflect on Dr. Rubenstein’s long-standing dedication and contributions to Saraland, recognizing the significant impact of his leadership over the past two decades.
