Mobile, AL (BuzzReport)- A traffic stop turned tragic on Saturday, June 7, when a passenger in a vehicle experienced a medical episode while in police custody, resulting in their death. According to Mobile Police Department (MPD) officials, the incident occurred at approximately 9:43 pm in the 6000 block of Old Pascagoula Road. While in custody, 33-year-old Kevin Gardner, the passenger, began experiencing a medical emergency. Theodore-Dawes Fire-Rescue and Mobile County EMS responded promptly and initiated medical treatment. Despite their efforts, Gardner was pronounced deceased shortly after arrival. Authorities stated that officers pulled over a car due to an equipment violation. Upon further investigation, it was discovered that neither the driver nor the passenger had a valid driver’s license. Police asked both individuals to sit unrestrained in the back of a patrol unit while waiting for their identifying information. The Mobile Police Department has launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding Gardner’s death. The investigation is ongoing, and MPD has not released any further details at this time.
