New Africatown Welcome Center Breaks Ground in Mobile

Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – The City of Mobile celebrated a significant milestone on Monday with the groundbreaking of the new Africatown Welcome Center. This $5.1 million project is set to become a vibrant hub for the community, providing a welcoming space for both residents and visitors.

The center is made possible through funding from the federal RESTORE Act. According to city officials, the facility will serve as an anchor for the community, offering a gathering space and a starting point for those visiting the nearby Heritage House.

For Patricia Frazier, a descendant of a Clotilda survivor, the center holds deep personal significance. “I’m very glad because I can remember when there was nothing here but the trail,” Frazier said. “So to know that people who come into this community will have somewhere to start before they actually go to the Heritage House is really something good.”

The center represents a connection to Frazier’s family’s history and the community’s rich heritage. “It has always been a connection, and it came up year after year,” Frazier explained. “My great aunt did our family history and always tied it to this community. It is good to see something else happening here.”

The new welcome center is expected to enhance the community’s cultural and historical significance, providing a space for connection and celebration.

The project is expected to be finished in about a year.
