Mobile, AL – The Mobile community is in mourning following the passing of John Edd Thompson, longtime Chief Meteorologist for FOX10, who died at the age of 83. Thompson was a beloved fixture in local homes for three decades, delivering weather forecasts with authority and comforting reassurance before retiring in 2009.

For many in the Gulf Coast region, Thompson was more than just a weatherman; he was a trusted voice during times of uncertainty, particularly when hurricanes threatened. During his tenure, he expertly guided viewers through the dangers of some of the region’s most devastating storms, including Frederic, Ivan, and Katrina. His calm demeanor and clear explanations helped countless residents prepare and stay safe during these critical moments.

Beyond his contributions to weather broadcasting, Thompson was also a passionate supporter of the arts and a driving force behind the Frank Brown International Songwriters’ Festival in Gulf Shores. His commitment to the festival helped to showcase talented songwriters and enrich the cultural landscape of the region.

A proud local, Thompson was a graduate of Murphy High School and went on to pursue higher education at the University of Alabama and Mississippi State University.

He leaves behind his wife, Sharon, and a host of other loved ones. The FOX10 family expressed their condolences, stating, “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family during this difficult time.”

John Edd Thompson’s legacy extends far beyond the television screen. He will be remembered for his dedication to public service, his passion for his community, and the unwavering trust he built with viewers throughout the Gulf Coast. His contributions to weather forecasting and the arts will be deeply missed.

  1. I will never forget how John Ed helped me during Frederic!! He was kind and very professional as I was responsible for keeping over 168 patients & 180 family members as we were bombarded with AC units flying in the parking lot! God Bless John Ed’s family and friends & know what a wonderful blessing this man was to all!!
