Washington D.C. – Representative Gerry Connolly (D-VA) announced Monday that he will soon step down from his role as the ranking Democratic member of the House Oversight Committee, citing a setback in his ongoing battle with cancer. His decision marks the end of a distinguished career in public service and opens up a highly coveted position on the committee, potentially paving the way for a new generation of Democratic leadership.

“The sun is setting on my time in public service, and this will be my last term in Congress,” Connolly, a nine-term lawmaker, wrote in a note to constituents. “I will be stepping down as ranking member of the House oversight committee soon.”

Connolly, aged 75, expressed pride in his accomplishments over his 30 years of service, adding, “With no rancor and a full heart, I move into this final chapter full of pride in what we’ve accomplished together over 30 years.”

The news has already spurred speculation about potential successors. Among the names being discussed are prominent and ambitious younger lawmakers, including Representatives Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez (D-NY), Ro Khanna (D-CA), Robert Garcia (D-CA), and Jasmine Crockett (D-TX).

Ocasio-Cortez is considered a strong contender for the position. She previously challenged Connolly for the ranking member role in a Democratic caucus meeting last December, garnering a significant 84 votes compared to Connolly’s 131. The position is seen as critical for pushing back against the potential second-term agenda of President Trump.

Beyond her legislative work, Ocasio-Cortez, a third-term lawmaker representing parts of Queens and the Bronx, has also generated buzz regarding a potential 2028 presidential run, fueled by a series of successful rallies in western red states alongside Senator Bernie Sanders (I-VT).

Connolly assumed the position of ranking member following Representative Jamie Raskin’s (D-MD) successful bid to unseat Representative Jerry Nadler (D-NY) as the top Democrat on the House Judiciary Committee. The upcoming leadership change on the Oversight Committee reflects a dynamic shift within the Democratic party as a new wave of leaders emerges. It remains to be seen who will ultimately succeed Connolly and the direction they will take the influential committee.
