Milwaukee, WI — In a shocking development amidst ongoing tensions over immigration enforcement policies, FBI Director Kash Patel announced the arrest of Judge Hannah Dugan of Milwaukee. The judge is accused of deliberately obstructing U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) operations by allegedly aiding a man in evading capture at her courthouse.

The arrest took place on Friday, elevating an already contentious relationship between the Trump administration and the judiciary regarding immigration enforcement. Patel shared details of the arrest on social media, claiming that Judge Dugan had “intentionally misdirected” federal agents from apprehending a suspect at her courthouse. He stated, “Thankfully, our agents chased down the perp on foot and he’s been in custody since, but the Judge’s obstruction created increased danger to the public.”

Following her arrest, Judge Dugan made a brief appearance in federal court in Milwaukee before being released. Her next court date is scheduled for May 15. During her court appearance, her attorney, Craig Mastantuono, vehemently defended her, saying, “Judge Dugan wholeheartedly regrets and protests her arrest. It was not made in the interest of public safety.” Mastantuono declined to make further comments to reporters after the hearing.

This incident unfolds within a backdrop of escalating confrontation between local officials and federal authorities over immigration enforcement efforts. The Justice Department had previously indicated that it would intensify scrutiny of local government actions that impede federal immigration operations. In January, a memo was issued to federal prosecutors urging an investigation into state and local officials for potential criminal charges related to obstructing federal functions, including laws concerning conspiracy and the harboring of individuals residing illegally in the country.

While court documents outlining the specific allegations against Judge Dugan have yet to be released, the implications of her arrest are significant. The situation surfaces amidst heightened national debates regarding the role of judiciary members in the enforcement of immigration laws.

Judge Dugan was first elected to Milwaukee County Circuit Court Branch 31 in 2016, where she has occupied positions in the probate and civil divisions. Her professional background includes work with Legal Action of Wisconsin and the Legal Aid Society, showcasing a commitment to public service in her community. Dugan is an alumna of the University of Wisconsin-Madison, having received her Bachelor of Arts degree in 1981 and her Juris Doctorate in 1987.

As the legal proceedings evolve, the intersection of state, federal, and judicial authority will be closely examined, raising questions about the balance of power and the role of local courts in the enforcement of national immigration policies. The Justice Department has yet to comment on this unprecedented arrest, leaving many to speculate on the ramifications for both Judge Dugan and the broader judicial system.

Many are calling this an over reach by the FBI and the judicial system.
