Mobile, AL – A 64-year-old Semmes resident, Russell Smith, is currently being held at the Mobile County Metro Jail after being charged with five counts of possession of child pornography. The arrest took place on Wednesday following a disturbing discovery made during a routine data transfer at an AT&T store. According to Todd Freind, the chief of police in Semmes, an AT&T representative stumbled upon multiple images of child pornography while assisting Smith in transferring data from one cell phone to another. Alarmed by the find, the representative promptly alerted local law enforcement around 10 a.m. Wednesday, prompting police officers to take immediate action. Upon receipt of the tip, officers quickly responded by seizing both phones involved in the transaction. Following the seizure, Smith was detained and subjected to questioning regarding the material found on his devices. The investigation is still ongoing, and authorities are working to ascertain the full scope of the situation. Child pornography is a serious crime with severe legal repercussions, and the Semmes community is now grappling with the shock of this incident. Local law enforcement agencies are reminding the public to report any suspicious activity and remain vigilant against such offenses. Smith remains in custody as further investigations continue.
