NEW ORLEANS and MOBILE, Ala. – In a significant enhancement to regional transportation, Amtrak has finalized agreements to initiate new twice-daily intercity train service along the picturesque Mississippi Gulf Coast between New Orleans and Mobile, Alabama. This summer, the state-sponsored Amtrak Mardi Gras Service will provide convenient morning and evening departures from both vibrant cities, reigniting a vital transit link that has been dormant for nearly 20 years. This new service pays homage to the rich cultural heritage of the area, particularly its famed Mardi Gras celebrations, which draw inspiration from the unique traditions in both New Orleans and Mobile, as well as the coastal communities of Mississippi. Amtrak President Roger Harris emphasized that “Amtrak Mardi Gras Service is a natural choice for the name of the new trains,” as it encapsulates the region’s energy and celebration. He added, “Travel should be about more than just getting somewhere,” highlighting the intention to imbue each journey with some of the festive spirit associated with Mardi Gras. Alongside travel between New Orleans and Mobile, the service will establish same-day connections for travelers to the coastal cities of Bay Saint Louis, Gulfport, Biloxi, and Pascagoula, allowing seamless transfers to the renowned Amtrak City of New Orleans trains, which operate between New Orleans and Chicago. Additionally, guests will be able to connect in New Orleans to other key routes, including the Amtrak Crescent to New York and the Sunset Limited to Los Angeles. Local leaders expressed excitement about the new service’s potential to bolster the Gulf Coast’s economy and promote tourism. Joe Donahue, Secretary of the Louisiana Department of Transportation and Development, stated, “This service will enhance connectivity, boost local economies, and create memorable experiences for travelers who wish to explore the beautiful landscapes and rich heritage of our region.” Mississippi Transportation Commissioner Charles Busby echoed this sentiment, emphasizing the individuality of each coastal city and the opportunities that come with enhanced transport links. Mobile Mayor Sandy Stimpson highlighted the historic ties between Mobile and New Orleans, declaring the Amtrak Mardi Gras Service an asset for both communities. “We are so excited to welcome new visitors from those communities when the Amtrak Mardi Gras Service launches later this year,” he remarked, anticipating benefits for local citizens and the downtown waterfront. The Southern Rail Commission’s Chairman, Knox Ross, expressed enthusiasm for the broader implications of the service, predicting it will unlock new tourism markets and support local businesses throughout the Gulf Coast. “The Southern Rail Commission couldn’t be prouder to see this service come to reality,” Ross said, looking forward to celebrating aboard the trains. Details regarding fares and schedules will be available on Amtrak.com as the service launch date approaches. Passengers can expect a comfortable travel experience featuring wide reclining seats, ample legroom, and pet-friendly accommodations. With state and local partnerships fueling this new endeavor, Amtrak will operate a total of 31 state-sponsored routes, further expanding its footprint across the nation. Senator Roger Wicker (R-Miss.) commended the restoration of the Gulf Coast rail service, highlighting collaborative efforts between state and local governments that promise to enhance transportation opportunities for residents along the coast. “I am grateful to Amtrak for helping restore this line after nearly two decades of no service. Mississippians deserve access to reliable transportation,” he stated. As excitement builds toward the summer launch, the Amtrak Mardi Gras Service stands poised to become an integral part of Gulf Coast life, weaving the region’s unique cultural tapestry into the fabric of modern travel.
