Rising Crime and Non-Functional Cameras in Mobile Parks Raise Public Concerns

MOBILE, AL – The residents of Mobile are increasingly distressed over the safety of their city parks, especially following a series of violent incidents including recent shootings and a tragic death. Many community members are calling for improvements to make parks more enjoyable and welcoming for families and visitors alike. Citizens have learned that the Mobile Police Department is unable to effectively track suspects in certain parks due to broken or outdated cameras. The city government previously announced plans to upgrade surveillance systems, promising enhanced security through the installation of new cameras. Recently, after another shooting at Sage Park near Dauphin Street that resulted in one woman’s death and injuries to another individual, residents discovered that the cameras intended to monitor the area were still not operational.

A city spokesperson explained that the Mobile Police Department is actively working to improve surveillance capabilities by installing state-of-the-art PTZ (pan, tilt, zoom) cameras at several parks, including Langan Park—another site of recent violence. These new cameras are part of a broader initiative funded by taxpayer dollars aimed at creating a unified, accessible security network. According to city officials, the upgraded system will enable law enforcement officers to remotely access footage via the Real-Time Crime Center (RTC), facilitating quicker responses and better crime prevention.

Despite these efforts, community members remain frustrated and fearful, feeling that promises of improved safety have yet to be fulfilled. “We pay taxes for security, but when the cameras aren’t working, it feels like we’re left unprotected,” said a local resident. The lack of operational cameras has hindered investigations, with no arrests made yet in the recent shooting at Langan Park.
