Dauphin Island, AL (BuzzReport) — Dauphin Island officials are urging residents, property owners and visitors to begin preparing now as forecasters monitor a developing tropical system in the southwestern Gulf of Mexico that could bring impacts to the Alabama Gulf Coast later this week and into the upcoming weekend.

Dauphin Island Mayor issued a statement warning that the system could strengthen over the next several days before potentially moving toward the northern Gulf Coast. Current forecasts indicate the possibility of the system reaching land as a strong tropical storm or potentially a hurricane.

However, officials stress that the forecast remains uncertain at this stage.

The mayor is urging residents and property owners not to wait until the last minute to prepare. Even if the system’s eventual track or strength changes, coastal residents should closely monitor updated forecasts and be prepared to take action if the storm moves toward Dauphin Island and surrounding areas.

For those with homes, businesses or property on the island, officials recommend using the coming days to review hurricane plans, secure outdoor items, check emergency supplies and make arrangements for vehicles, boats and other property that could be threatened by strong winds, heavy rainfall or coastal flooding.

Visitors and beachgoers are also being urged to use caution as conditions across the Gulf could deteriorate ahead of the system. Increasing surf and dangerous rip currents are possible, making it especially important for swimmers to observe posted warning flags and follow instructions from beach safety officials.

The Town of Dauphin Island says it will continue providing updates as the situation develops and will keep residents informed until the threat has passed.

While it is too early to know exactly where the system will go or how strong it could become, officials say the message is simple: prepare early, monitor reliable weather updates and be ready to act if conditions warrant.

Residents and visitors should continue monitoring the latest forecasts as the tropical system develops and remember that storm tracks and intensity can change significantly several days before landfall.

Stay alert. Stay prepared. Stay safe.
