Mobile, AL (BuzzReport)— After nearly five decades of broadcasting and more than four decades helping keep the Gulf Coast informed through changing weather conditions, longtime WKRG meteorologist John Nodar is preparing to sign off for the final time. Nodar announced that he will retire from broadcasting on November 30, bringing an end to a 47-year career in radio and television, including 41 years with WKRG. His retirement will come as the 2026 hurricane season draws to a close, marking the end of a remarkable era for a meteorologist who has become a familiar and trusted presence in Mobile and communities across the Gulf Coast. In announcing his retirement, Nodar reflected on the people he has worked alongside at WKRG and expressed confidence in the station’s current team. He praised the station’s management, engineers, newsroom staff and meteorologists, describing them as dedicated professionals committed to providing factual and fair coverage. Nodar also made clear that retirement will not mean leaving Mobile. He and his wife, Janet, plan to remain in the Mobile area, where they have built their home and raised their family. Nodar said the couple looks forward to continuing to be part of the community and witnessing the growth and changes taking place across the region. For generations of viewers, Nodar’s departure will represent more than the retirement of a longtime television meteorologist. His career has spanned decades of hurricanes, tropical storms, severe weather outbreaks, heat waves and countless daily forecasts that helped families, businesses and communities prepare for whatever conditions were headed their way. After 47 years in broadcasting and 41 years at WKRG, Nodar leaves behind a lasting connection with the people of Mobile and the Gulf Coast. As he prepares for his final broadcast, Nodar thanked viewers for their trust and for the kindness they have shown him throughout his career. His next chapter will remain rooted in the same community he has served for decades. For many across the Gulf Coast, John Nodar’s retirement will be the closing of a significant chapter in local television weather coverage—and the beginning of a well-earned new chapter here in Mobile.
