Moss Point Mayor Eyes Major Growth Along I-10 Corridor

Moss Point, MS (BuzzReport) — The City of Moss Point is moving closer to a major infrastructure and redevelopment push along the Interstate 10 corridor, with city officials now working to secure a contractor for a project they believe could reshape one of the city’s most important areas for future growth.

Mayor Billy Knight said the city has cleared several major regulatory hurdles that had been necessary before the I-10 corridor project could move forward. The next major step is selecting a contractor, with city leaders hoping construction can advance quickly enough to allow for a ribbon-cutting ceremony before the end of the year.

At the center of the project is the construction of a service road along the I-10 corridor, along with efforts to revitalize the area surrounding the Pilot Truck Stop. City officials view the interstate corridor as a key location for attracting new development, businesses and investment into Moss Point.

The project has required extensive coordination and preparation. Knight said the city had to work with the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and the Mississippi Department of Transportation, while also navigating the complicated process of acquiring property needed to complete the infrastructure improvements.

Property acquisition became one of the more time-consuming portions of the project because the city had to negotiate with multiple families who owned property in the area.

Knight said city officials worked individually with property owners in an effort to reach agreements that would allow the project to proceed.

The mayor described the I-10 corridor as Moss Point’s “growth area,” emphasizing the potential economic impact that could follow once the infrastructure is completed.

“Once you get the infrastructure in the ground, the service roads built, there’s no telling what’s going to pop up there,” Knight said.

That infrastructure could be critical to future development. Improved access and transportation connections can make undeveloped or underdeveloped property more attractive to businesses and developers, potentially creating opportunities for commercial projects and additional investment along the interstate.

For Moss Point, the project represents more than the construction of another roadway. City leaders see it as an investment in the infrastructure needed to support the community’s next phase of development.

Waterfront Redevelopment Also Moving Forward

While the I-10 corridor project focuses on future growth and development, Moss Point is also preparing to invest in one of its most prominent existing assets — its downtown waterfront.

Knight said the city plans to begin design work on a waterfront redevelopment project near downtown, with construction expected to begin around the first of the year.

The planned improvements are expected to address several long-standing infrastructure concerns while also creating new opportunities for recreation and entertainment.

The project includes renovations to the pier, removal of corroded lights from the water, stabilization of a deteriorating bulkhead and construction of a small amphitheater that could provide a new venue for entertainment and community events.

The bulkhead work is particularly important because deteriorating waterfront infrastructure can become increasingly expensive and difficult to repair if problems are allowed to worsen.

The proposed amphitheater, meanwhile, could give the downtown waterfront a new purpose beyond its existing uses, potentially providing space for concerts, community gatherings and other public events.

Knight described the waterfront property as one of the city’s greatest assets.

“That’s the most valuable piece of property, in my opinion, in the city of Moss Point, right there on that waterfront,” Knight said.

Taken together, the two projects represent two different pieces of Moss Point’s redevelopment strategy: building new infrastructure to encourage growth along I-10 while reinvesting in the city’s historic waterfront and downtown area.

If the current timeline holds, Moss Point could see significant activity on both fronts in the coming months, with the I-10 corridor moving toward construction and the waterfront project entering its design phase.

For city officials, the goal is clear: create the infrastructure necessary to attract investment while transforming existing public spaces into destinations that can generate activity for residents, visitors and businesses.

The success of those efforts will ultimately depend on construction timelines, available funding, continued coordination with state and federal agencies and the ability to attract private development once the infrastructure is in place. But for now, city leaders say the groundwork is being laid for what could become a significant new chapter in Moss Point’s economic and community development.
