WASHINGTON (BuzzReport) — President Donald Trump on Sunday ordered the Pentagon to substantially reduce planned joint military exercises with South Korea, abruptly altering preparations for a major annual exercise just one day before the drills were scheduled to begin. Trump said the decision was driven by several factors, including the cost of the exercises, his stated desire to avoid sending what he considers a provocative message to North Korea and frustration with South Korea after Seoul declined to assist the United States in efforts to denuclearize Iran. The president announced the decision in a post on social media, saying he had instructed Secretary of War Pete Hegseth to reduce the exercises rather than cancel them outright because preparations were already too far along. “Therefore, and based on the fact that it is too late to cancel, I have instructed Secretary of War, Pete Hegseth, to substantially reduce the Joint Military Exercises!” Trump wrote. Trump Points to Relationship With Kim Jong Un Trump placed particular emphasis on his relationship with North Korean leader Kim Jong Un, arguing that the military exercises could undermine his efforts to maintain dialogue with Pyongyang. In his announcement, Trump said the exercises were costly and “send a signal that is totally inappropriate and hostile” to North Korea. He also characterized North Korea as having been “unthreatening and respectful” during his time in the White House and pointed to what he described as his “very good relationship” with Kim. The decision represents a significant shift in the traditional U.S. approach to military readiness on the Korean Peninsula. Washington and Seoul have long relied on combined exercises as a way to maintain operational readiness and demonstrate the strength of their alliance in the face of North Korea’s nuclear and missile programs. Trump has previously criticized large-scale U.S.-South Korean exercises as expensive and provocative, including during his first administration. His latest directive, however, comes at a time when North Korea continues to develop its military capabilities and has maintained a significant military posture in the region. Iran Dispute Adds Another Layer Trump also connected Sunday’s decision to a separate disagreement with South Korea over Iran. The president said he recently asked South Korea’s president to join the United States in efforts to denuclearize Iran, but claimed Seoul rejected the request. “They said, ‘No thanks!’” Trump wrote. Trump’s comments suggest that Washington’s relationship with Seoul is being viewed through a broader foreign-policy lens, with cooperation on issues outside the Korean Peninsula now appearing to factor into the administration’s approach to the longstanding U.S.-South Korean security partnership. The decision could raise questions among U.S. and South Korean officials about whether disagreements over unrelated international issues could increasingly affect the two countries’ military cooperation. North Korea Has Long Opposed the Exercises North Korea has repeatedly condemned U.S.-South Korean military exercises, describing them as rehearsals for a potential invasion. Washington and Seoul have consistently characterized the drills as defensive exercises designed to improve military readiness and strengthen the countries’ ability to respond to a potential attack. The exercises have remained an important part of the U.S.-South Korean alliance, allowing troops from both nations to practice coordinated responses to a variety of threats, including missile attacks, cyberattacks and other military contingencies. Trump’s latest order could therefore be viewed in Pyongyang as a significant diplomatic gesture, particularly if the president hopes to reopen direct negotiations with Kim. Questions About the U.S.-South Korea Alliance The president’s decision is likely to fuel debate over how the United States should balance diplomacy with North Korea against the need to maintain military readiness with South Korea. For Seoul, joint military exercises are a central part of its defense strategy against North Korea. For Washington, they provide an opportunity for American and South Korean forces to train together and prepare for potential crises. Supporters of Trump’s decision could argue that reducing the exercises creates an opportunity to lower tensions and potentially bring North Korea back to the negotiating table. Critics, however, could contend that reducing military training risks weakening readiness and could create uncertainty for an important U.S. ally. The decision is particularly significant because Trump is directly tying the reduction of the exercises to his relationship with Kim Jong Un and South Korea’s refusal to participate in his efforts regarding Iran. For now, the exercises are not being canceled entirely. Instead, Trump has ordered the Pentagon to substantially scale them back. The move represents another dramatic shift in U.S. policy toward the Korean Peninsula and places renewed attention on Trump’s strategy of using diplomacy and his personal relationship with Kim Jong Un to reduce tensions with North Korea. How the Pentagon carries out the president’s order — and how Seoul and Pyongyang respond — could have significant implications for the future of one of America’s most important military alliances in Asia.
