Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport)— Alabama Democrats gathered in Montgomery on Saturday for a pivotal organizational election that will shape the direction of the state Democratic Party over the next four years.

State Sen. Bobby Singleton defeated Pastor Randy Kelly in the race for State Democratic Party Chair, emerging as the party’s new leader after a campaign centered heavily on unity, modernization and rebuilding Democratic strength across Alabama.

Minutes before the vote, Singleton delivered a message focused on bringing the party together while placing a renewed emphasis on younger Democrats and the need for the party to embrace new technology and new political strategies.

“We want to let you know the youth caucus is the future of this party, that you are going to be the people who are going to help this party move,” Singleton told party members. “The youth of this party is our future.”

Singleton argued that Alabama Democrats cannot continue relying on old political approaches if the party hopes to compete effectively in the years ahead.

“We can no longer sit back and do things in an archaic way,” he said. “We’ve got to get technologically strong, we’ve got to do new things and build upon the power we have.”

His message ultimately centered on one word: unity.

“That’s what we will do as Democrats. We’re going to unite as one party,” Singleton said.

Singleton also reached out to other important constituencies within the Democratic Party, including women and LGBTQ members, signaling that his leadership will seek to broaden participation and strengthen relationships among the party’s various caucuses and voting blocs.

One of Singleton’s most ambitious commitments is to take the state party directly into communities across Alabama. He pledged to tour all 67 counties, an effort that could give the new chairman an opportunity to reconnect with local Democratic organizations, voters and activists in both urban and rural areas.

The election represents a significant moment for Alabama Democrats, who have faced difficult statewide political conditions and internal debates over the party’s future. Singleton’s victory now places him at the center of the effort to define a new strategy and rebuild the party’s political infrastructure ahead of future elections.

Singleton’s preferred candidate for vice chair, Caroline Self, also won her election, giving the new chairman an ally in the party’s leadership structure as he begins his four-year term.

With the organizational election now complete, Singleton enters the chairmanship facing a major challenge: turning his calls for unity, modernization and grassroots engagement into a statewide political operation capable of competing in Alabama’s increasingly consequential elections.

His promise to visit every county could be an early test of that strategy—and a signal that the new Alabama Democratic Party leadership intends to take its message beyond Montgomery and directly to voters across the state.
