PRICHARD, Ala. (BuzzReport)— In the wake of the arrest of a longtime Prichard police officer and growing concerns over allegations of misconduct within the department, Prichard Mayor Carletta Davis is assuring residents that city leaders are committed to restoring confidence in law enforcement while working toward a complete restructuring of the police department. The mayor released a public statement addressing the ongoing transition between the Prichard Police Department and the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), emphasizing that public safety remains the administration’s highest priority. “I want to take a moment to address questions we have received regarding the current transition involving the Prichard Police Department and our coordination with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office,” Davis said. According to the mayor, the City of Prichard continues to work closely with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office to ensure there is no interruption in law enforcement services while the department undergoes significant changes. “Our top priority is, and will continue to be, maintaining control of our public safety services and ensuring continuity of law enforcement services for our community members,” Davis stated. “This Administration remains fully engaged, fully informed, and fully cooperating with all agencies throughout this process.” She added that daily policing operations are currently being coordinated with the Sheriff’s Office to guarantee that emergency response and public safety services continue uninterrupted for residents. County Covering Cost of Sheriff’s Services Mayor Davis also revealed that the cost of the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office assisting the city is currently being covered by Mobile County, easing any immediate financial burden on Prichard taxpayers during the transition. She further clarified that despite the Sheriff’s Office taking a larger operational role, employees of the Prichard Police Department remain city employees and continue reporting to work. Administration Seeking Complete Department Evaluation Perhaps the most significant announcement from the mayor involves her administration’s plans to seek City Council approval to hire an independent Public Safety Consultant to conduct a comprehensive evaluation of the police department. According to Davis, the consultant would examine the department’s operations, identify deficiencies, recommend structural changes, and help guide the city toward rebuilding a modern police agency focused on accountability, professionalism, and community trust. The long-term goal, she said, is to create a stronger police department capable of achieving national accreditation while better serving the residents of Prichard. “Our Administration has always envisioned a safer Prichard and has listened closely to community members who have shared concerns about public safety in their homes and neighborhoods,” Davis said. Questions Remain About Department Leadership While the mayor outlined her vision for rebuilding the department, several major questions remain unanswered. City officials have not announced when control of daily law enforcement operations will transition back from the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office to the Prichard Police Department. Likewise, Davis has not indicated whether the city plans to appoint an entirely new police administration or implement sweeping leadership changes following the recent revelations of alleged misconduct and mismanagement within the department. Those decisions are expected to play a major role in determining the future direction of law enforcement in Prichard. Community Looking for Answers The recent arrest of a veteran Prichard police officer, coupled with concerns surrounding the department’s operations, has intensified calls for transparency and reform from residents seeking accountability and renewed confidence in local law enforcement. Mayor Davis concluded her statement by pledging that every decision moving forward will be made with the best interests of Prichard citizens in mind. “We are working through this process carefully, lawfully, and with the best interests of our citizens at the center of every decision. The Administration is committed to being there for the community during this time and will continue its efforts to create a new future for Prichard.” As the city navigates one of the most significant transitions in the history of its police department, residents continue to await answers about when local officers will fully resume operations and what lasting reforms will emerge from the ongoing investigation.
