ESCAMBIA COUNTY, Fla. (BuzzReport)— A death investigation is underway in Escambia County after a decomposed body was discovered Thursday morning near a Walmart along Pensacola Boulevard, according to the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

Authorities say the grim discovery was made after multiple people in the area reported a strong and unusual odor coming from a nearby location. Deputies responded to investigate and subsequently located the body of an adult male.

Investigators revealed that the individual was found in an advanced state of decomposition, making it difficult to immediately determine how long he had been at the scene or the circumstances surrounding his death.

The discovery prompted a response from sheriff’s investigators and crime scene personnel, who secured the area while evidence was collected and the scene was processed.

Officials have not released the identity of the deceased, pending notification of next of kin and further investigation.

The body has been transported to the Medical Examiner’s Office, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the exact cause and manner of death. Investigators hope the examination will provide critical answers about what led to the man’s death and whether foul play was involved.

At this time, authorities have not indicated any signs of criminal activity, but they stress that the investigation remains active and ongoing.

Anyone with information that could assist investigators is encouraged to contact the Escambia County Sheriff’s Office.

More information is expected to be released as the investigation progresses.
