BIRMINGHAM, Ala. (BuzzReport) — Birmingham police are investigating a deadly mass shooting that left two people dead and five others wounded Thursday night in the city’s Sandusky neighborhood, marking another tragic act of gun violence that has shaken the community.

Officers with the Birmingham Police Department were dispatched shortly after 8:30 p.m. to the 100 block of Holley Avenue following reports of multiple people being shot. Upon arrival, officers encountered a chaotic and disturbing scene, discovering at least seven adults suffering from gunshot wounds.

Birmingham Fire and Rescue personnel responded immediately and transported the victims to UAB Hospital for emergency treatment. Authorities later confirmed that two victims—a man and a woman—succumbed to their injuries. The victims have been identified as 50-year-old Benard Duane Montez Watts and 33-year-old Diandra Young Johnson, both of Birmingham.

Investigators say preliminary evidence suggests a gathering was taking place when gunfire suddenly erupted, sending people scrambling for safety. Police have not yet determined how many shooters were involved, but officials described the scene as one marked by an overwhelming amount of gunfire. More than 30 shell casings were reportedly recovered by crime scene investigators.

“We are on the scene of a massive shooting,” Birmingham police officials said as investigators worked through the night to piece together exactly what happened. Detectives have indicated that numerous witnesses were transported to police headquarters for questioning as authorities seek to identify suspects and determine a motive.

Law enforcement agencies deployed extensive resources to the area, including the department’s Star 1 helicopter, which assisted officers from the air as they searched for possible suspects and gathered information. At this time, no arrests have been announced and no suspects have been publicly identified.

Police officials expressed shock over the violence, noting that community members described the location as an area that rarely experiences serious criminal incidents. The sudden eruption of gunfire has left residents searching for answers and mourning the loss of life.

The investigation remains active and ongoing. Authorities are urging anyone with information about the shooting to contact Birmingham Police detectives or Crime Stoppers. Investigators believe witness cooperation will be critical in helping identify those responsible.

As detectives continue their work, the Sandusky community is left grieving two lives lost and praying for the recovery of the five surviving victims, while city leaders and law enforcement renew calls for accountability and an end to the violence that continues to impact neighborhoods across Birmingham.
