Baton Rouge, LA (BuzzReport) — A deadly shooting at the Mall of Louisiana has led to the arrest of a teenage suspect, as authorities continue an urgent search for additional individuals believed to be involved.

During a Friday press conference, Baton Rouge Police confirmed that 17-year-old Markel Lee turned himself in and was subsequently booked into the East Baton Rouge Parish Prison. He now faces a series of serious charges, including first-degree murder, five counts of attempted first-degree murder, and illegal use of a weapon.

Investigators say the violence was not random. Police Chief T.J. Morse stated that the shooting, which erupted near the mall’s food court Thursday afternoon, stemmed from a targeted confrontation between two groups.

The gunfire left six people wounded. Among them was 17-year-old Martha Odom, who tragically died from her injuries. Another victim remains in critical condition, while others sustained varying injuries.

Odom, a senior at Ascension Episcopal School in Lafayette, has been remembered as a young life taken far too soon. In the wake of the tragedy, Lafayette Mayor-President Monique B. Boulet expressed deep sorrow, calling the violence “senseless” and devastating to the community.

Authorities initially detained five individuals shortly after the shooting, but all have since been released. However, law enforcement officials have confirmed that at least one additional suspect remains at large, and efforts to locate that individual are ongoing.

Police are urging anyone with information to come forward as investigators work to piece together the events that led to the deadly encounter.

This remains an active and ongoing investigation.
