Monroeville, AL (BuzzReport) — State authorities have launched an investigation following the death of a Monroeville man who became unresponsive while in police custody Monday afternoon. According to officials, Special Agents with the Alabama Law Enforcement Agency’s State Bureau of Investigation (SBI) initiated the inquiry at approximately 3:50 p.m. on March 30, at the request of the Monroeville Police Department. The investigation centers on the in-custody death of Ammarin Lada Tunstall, 35, a resident of Monroeville. Authorities said Tunstall had been taken into custody earlier that day by officers with the Monroeville Police Department. During the course of the incident, he reportedly became unresponsive while in custody. Emergency personnel responded and administered Naloxone—commonly known by the brand name Narcan—a medication used to rapidly reverse the effects of opioid overdoses. Following the medical emergency, Tunstall was transported to a local hospital for treatment. Despite life-saving efforts, he was later pronounced dead. As part of standard protocol in in-custody death cases, Tunstall’s body has been transferred to the Alabama Department of Forensic Sciences, where an autopsy will be conducted to determine the official cause and manner of death. Officials have not released additional details regarding the circumstances leading up to Tunstall’s arrest or the events immediately preceding his medical distress. Authorities emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing. Once completed, the findings of the SBI investigation will be submitted to the Monroe County District Attorney’s Office for review and any potential further action.
