Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport) — Kay Ivey is recovering after undergoing a minor medical procedure Tuesday afternoon at Baptist Medical Center South, following several weeks of persistent discomfort.

According to a statement released by her office, Governor Ivey had been experiencing pain in her left side for approximately three weeks. While initially monitoring the symptoms, she sought additional medical attention after recently experiencing mild shortness of breath.

Her primary care physician recommended further evaluation by a surgeon, which led to the discovery of fluid buildup pressing against her lung. Though the condition was not deemed an emergency, the governor opted to proceed with treatment promptly to prevent further complications and minimize time away from her official duties.

Medical staff at Baptist South successfully performed a procedure to remove the fluid Tuesday afternoon. Officials described the procedure as minor and confirmed that it was completed without complications.

Out of an abundance of caution, Governor Ivey will remain under observation at the hospital for the next several days as doctors monitor her recovery.

In a message shared through her office, Ivey expressed confidence in her recovery and determination to return to work quickly. The governor is currently focused on regaining full strength as she prepares to continue leading Alabama through the remainder of the 2026 Regular Legislative Session.

State officials say there are no immediate concerns about her ability to resume her duties, and her office remains in communication with medical providers regarding her progress.

Further updates on the governor’s condition are expected in the coming days.
