Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) — A routine patrol in west Mobile led to the arrest of a man accused of cutting and stealing copper from an apartment complex, according to local authorities.
On Monday, March 23, 2026, officers were patrolling the 3700 block of Carlyle Close East, near The Hamptons at Pine Bend, when they observed a male subject carrying multiple bags along with a large pair of box cutters. The items raised suspicion, prompting officers to attempt an investigatory approach.
As officers moved in, the subject fled on foot into the nearby apartment complex. After a brief pursuit, officers were able to detain him without further incident.
During the course of the investigation, officers determined the suspect had allegedly entered Azalea Pointe Apartments, located at 651 Azalea Road, the night prior. Investigators say the individual cut and removed copper materials from the property, a crime that has become increasingly common due to the resale value of the metal.
The suspect was identified as Andrew Pope, Jr., 35. He was taken into custody and transported to Mobile Metro Jail, where he is being held pending formal charges.
Authorities have not released additional details regarding the extent of the damage or the value of the stolen materials. The investigation remains ongoing.
