LAUREL, Miss. (BuzzReport) – A Laurel police officer has been formally indicted in connection with the 2023 shooting of a child, marking a significant development in a case that has drawn scrutiny from the community and legal advocates.

According to the Brooks Law Firm, a grand jury returned an indictment on February 23, 2026, charging Officer Jacob Giangrosso with aggravated assault. The firm represents the child who was injured in the incident and confirmed the indictment in a public statement.

The shooting occurred on October 30, 2023, in Jones County. Details surrounding the circumstances of the incident, including what led to the discharge of the officer’s weapon, have not been fully disclosed by authorities.

The indictment follows a lengthy period of investigation into the shooting. Grand jury proceedings, which are conducted to determine whether sufficient evidence exists to bring criminal charges, ultimately concluded with the aggravated assault charge against Giangrosso.

Attorneys representing the child have indicated that the case underscores ongoing concerns regarding the use of force and accountability in law enforcement, particularly in incidents involving minors.

As of now, it is unclear whether Giangrosso remains on active duty or has been placed on administrative leave. Officials with the Laurel Police Department have not released additional statements regarding the officer’s employment status or the department’s internal review.

No court date has been publicly announced, and further proceedings are expected as the case moves through the judicial system.

The investigation into the October 2023 shooting and the subsequent indictment remain under close watch as more details are anticipated to emerge in the coming weeks.
