Montgomery, AL (BuzzReport) — Alabama gubernatorial candidate Doug Jones is urging state leaders to take immediate action on rising fuel costs by temporarily suspending the state’s gasoline and diesel taxes.
In a statement released this week, Jones called on Governor Kay Ivey and members of the Alabama Legislature to enact a 60- to 90-day pause on the state’s fuel tax. Currently, Alabama imposes a 30-cent per gallon tax on gasoline and a 31-cent per gallon tax on diesel.
According to Jones, such a suspension would return more than $100 million to Alabama residents, providing short-term financial relief as families contend with increasing costs at the pump and broader economic pressures.
“Alabama families were already struggling to make ends meet before being hit with the dramatically escalating costs at the gas pump that we’re seeing now,” Jones said. “This is one area where state leaders can make an immediate difference, especially as travel increases for spring break and Easter.”
Jones emphasized the urgency of the proposal, noting that seasonal travel and ongoing inflation are compounding financial strain for many households. He argued that a temporary tax suspension could serve as a direct and immediate way to ease that burden.
The proposal comes amid continued concerns over fuel prices and affordability across the state. While Jones has framed the plan as a short-term solution, it would ultimately require legislative approval and support from state leadership, including Governor Ivey, to take effect.
State officials have not yet publicly responded to the proposal.
