Tuskegee, AL (BuzzReport) — A long-awaited trial has begun for the Montgomery man accused in the 2019 kidnapping and killing of Aniah Blanchard, a case that shocked Alabama and drew national attention.

Blanchard, 19, was a student at Southern Union State Community College when she vanished in October 2019. She was last seen at a gas station in Auburn, sparking an intense, multi-agency search that gripped the region for weeks. One month later, her remains were discovered in a wooded area of Macon County, bringing a devastating end to hopes for her safe return.

Prosecutors allege that 34-year-old Ibraheem Yazeed abducted and murdered Blanchard. He was arrested just days after her disappearance and now faces a three-count capital murder indictment, charges that carry the possibility of the death penalty or life imprisonment without parole.

Jury selection began Monday and is expected to continue throughout the week. The proceedings are being conducted under a strict gag order, barring cameras from the courtroom and limiting public disclosure of evidence and testimony as the case unfolds.

For Blanchard’s family and supporters, the start of the trial marks a painful but pivotal moment—one that could finally bring accountability nearly seven years after a young woman’s life was tragically cut short.
