Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) – A 44-year-old teacher in Mobile has been arrested and subsequently fired from her position after a disturbing video widely circulated online. The footage allegedly depicts a woman repeatedly striking a child over two dozen times with a belt.

Nicole Staples was taken into custody Wednesday afternoon, charged with willful abuse of a child under 18. Her release from Metro Jail Wednesday evening, after posting a $7,500 bond, garnered attention as a video captured her quickly departing on a golf cart.

Jackson Staples, the woman’s adult son who no longer lives in the home, reported receiving the video on Tuesday and expressed significant alarm. He indicated that such violent actions were inappropriate, particularly for someone employed at a school, and related the incident to a pattern of similar treatment he experienced throughout his own upbringing.

Jackson Staples suggested the incident began due to his younger brother’s failure to complete kitchen chores. This reportedly led to the boy briefly leaving the house for a neighbor’s before returning, at which point the confrontation escalated.

The disturbing footage itself reportedly depicts a woman yelling at and striking the crying boy. It further appears to show the woman throwing the child to the ground by his hair.

Mobile County Sheriff Paul Burch described the video as egregious. He conveyed that while he supports appropriate parental discipline, noting that different families approach it in various ways, the actions shown in the video far surpassed any acceptable form of discipline. The Sheriff also commented that the investigation remains ongoing, finding it significant that another individual within the household chose to record the events.

Staples, formerly a teacher at Cottage Hill Christian Academy, was terminated from her position, despite the incident occurring off-campus, according to a statement released by the school.

Jackson Staples confirmed that his younger brothers are now residing with their aunt in Baldwin County. Staples is slated for a formal bond hearing before a judge on Friday.
