Betrayal and Bribery: Mississippi Law Enforcement Network Unraveled in FBI Drug Sting; Officers Arrested

JACKSON, MS (BuzzReport)– A sweeping federal investigation has culminated in the arrest of fourteen current and former law enforcement officers and six alleged co-conspirators across multiple counties in the Mississippi Delta, the FBI announced Thursday. The intricate web of corruption, which allegedly involved accepting bribes to facilitate drug trafficking, has sent shockwaves through the region and prompted a stern rebuke from federal authorities.

Among those taken into custody are high-ranking officials, including Washington County Sheriff Milton Gaston, Humphreys County Sheriff Bruce Williams, and Sunflower County Chief Deputy Marvin Flowers. Their arrests, along with those of officers from a dozen different local, county, and state agencies, reveal a deeply entrenched network operating within the very institutions sworn to uphold the law.

“This corruption permeated all levels, extended across multiple counties, multiple jurisdictions,” stated FBI Deputy Director Andrew Bailey during a press conference. “The Department of Justice and its subset, the FBI, will not allow wrongdoers to get away with it. We will stop these kinds of disgraceful and shameful abuses of public office, and… will not tolerate corruption among America’s criminal justice system.”

The investigation, initiated in March 2023 following complaints from individuals involved in drug dealing, effectively transformed into a sophisticated sting operation. Acting U.S. Attorney Clay Joyner revealed that federal officials posed as members of a Mexican drug cartel, seeking to move narcotics along the critical Highway 61 corridor that bisects the Mississippi Delta.

According to court documents unsealed in U.S. District Court, the defendants allegedly agreed to provide armed escorts for the transportation of both illegal narcotics and the proceeds from their illicit sales. These alleged escort services were confirmed on at least three occasions for drug shipments: March 8, 2023, March 20, 2024, and July 16, 2024. Similar escorts for drug money were purportedly provided on October 5, 2023, and again on July 16, 2024.

The indictment further details how some of the accused officers made multiple trips to Miami, Florida, to meet with the undercover agents. Notably, Brandon Addison of the Hollandale Police Department and Humphreys County Sheriff’s Office, and Javery Howard of the Metcalf Police Department and Hollandale Police, traveled to Miami on April 7, 2023. They, along with Dexter Franklin (Washington County Sheriff’s Office), Marcus Nolan (Mississippi Department of Corrections), Aasahn Roach, Pierre Lakes, and Derrik Wallace, are alleged to have returned to the Sunshine State in September 2024. During this meeting, court documents state, “each of the listed defendants affirmatively agreed to participate in the future escort of illegal narcotics through the Mississippi Delta and into Memphis.”

In exchange for their alleged complicity, the indicted officers are believed to have received substantial sums of money, totaling tens of thousands of dollars. The indictment outlines specific bribe amounts, including $37,500 for Addison, $31,000 for Howard, $20,000 for Sheriff Gaston, and $18,000 for Sheriff Williams.

The investigation, which ran from March 2023 to at least October 2024, has already led to immediate consequences for some of the accused. Mississippi Department of Public Safety Commissioner Sean Tindell and MDOC Commissioner Burl Cain issued a joint statement confirming that Martavis Moore, Sean Williams, Marcus Nolan, and Marquavious Bankhead have been “suspended or separated from employment with our respective agencies.”

“The Mississippi Department of Public Safety and Mississippi Department of Corrections do not condone, nor will we tolerate, conduct that violates the public’s trust, particularly from those who have taken an oath to protect and serve,” Cain and Tindell affirmed.

The arrests represent a significant blow to public trust in law enforcement across the Mississippi Delta, a region long plagued by socioeconomic challenges and the pervasive influence of drug trafficking. Federal officials have vowed that this operation is just the beginning of their efforts to root out corruption within the justice system.
