Delta State University in Mourning Following Discovery of Student’s Death on Campus

Cleveland, MS (BuzzReport) — Cleveland, Mississippi awoke Monday to tragic news that has shaken the entire Delta State University community. At approximately 7 a.m., university staff discovered the body of 21-year-old Trey Reed, a junior from Grenada, Mississippi, hanging from a tree near the campus pickleball courts. His death has prompted grief, uncertainty, and a wave of reflection at the regional university. 

Classes were immediately canceled across campus after the discovery, and students were advised to remain in their dormitories or leave campus while law enforcement secured the scene. University officials released a brief statement mid-morning, noting that details would be withheld until authorities could conclude their initial investigation. 

“At this time, we have no further details to share. Out of respect for the individual and their loved ones, we will refrain from additional comment until authorities release more information,” the statement read. “Our community is deeply saddened by this loss. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the family and friends impacted.”

By midday, during a press conference at the student union, the university confirmed the victim’s identity as Trey Reed, a well-regarded business major described by peers as quiet, thoughtful, and deeply involved in campus life. Reed had participated in several student organizations and was known to volunteer at local food drives through the university’s outreach initiatives.

DSU Police Chief Mike Peeler, who addressed media alongside representatives from the Cleveland Police Department, stated that while the investigation remains ongoing, “there is currently no evidence of foul play.”

Peeler emphasized that multiple agencies, including the Mississippi Bureau of Investigation, had been called in to assist. The area surrounding the pickleball courts was sealed off for most of the day as forensic teams collected evidence and documented the scene. Authorities have not yet confirmed whether Reed left behind any communication or note explaining the circumstances, but investigators are expected to release additional findings in the coming days. 

While there is no indication of criminal activity, officials are proceeding with caution and thoroughness. “When a young life is lost under such circumstances, it is our duty to treat the case with the utmost care and diligence,” Peeler added.

Delta State University has indicated that it will review its mental health programs in the aftermath of Reed’s death, with administrators pledging to evaluate additional measures to support students.
