Newbern Triumphs: Mayor Patrick Braxton Re-Elected, Ending Years of Disputed Leadership and Restoring Democracy

NEWBERN, AL – In a resounding victory that decisively closes a four-year chapter of leadership disputes and systemic disenfranchisement, Mayor Patrick Braxton has been overwhelmingly re-elected in Newbern, Alabama. His triumph, coming four years after his initial term was unlawfully blocked by White town officials, firmly establishes his mandate and marks a pivotal moment for the small, majority-Black community.

Official results confirm that Mayor Braxton secured a commanding 66 votes, trouncing his challenger, Laird Cole, a White auctioneer and Realtor, who garnered 26 votes. This decisive win not only confirms the community’s clear desire for Braxton’s leadership but also brings a definitive end to years of conflict that began in 2020.

The seeds of this dispute were sown in 2020 when Braxton, then a dedicated volunteer firefighter, became mayor-elect after running unopposed. However, Newbern’s democratic process had been dormant for decades. For generations, outgoing mayors handpicked their successors and filled council seats, resulting in a town run predominantly by White leaders despite its Black residents outnumbering them two to one.

Following his undeniable victory in 2020, Braxton was shockingly denied access to the town hall and municipal financial accounts. Locks were changed, and a clandestine meeting was held by existing council members to reappoint themselves, effectively nullifying the public’s will. This egregious act forced Braxton to spend three years entangled in legal battles, managing to serve only a single year of his rightful term.

The struggle for fair representation culminated in a lawsuit filed by Black residents, which led to a landmark federal settlement. This agreement mandated Newbern’s first true democratic election since the 1960s, ensuring a fair and unfettered opportunity for all residents to cast their vote.
