Los Angeles, CA (BuzzReport) – In a bold move signaling a no-holds-barred approach to perceived misrepresentation, California Governor Gavin Newsom has launched a staggering $787 million defamation lawsuit against Fox News. The suit, filed Friday, accuses the network of deliberately spreading falsehoods about a critical phone call between Newsom and then-President Donald Trump regarding the deployment of National Guard troops to Los Angeles amidst anti-immigration enforcement protests.

The crux of the complaint centers on allegations that Fox News host Jesse Watters falsely asserted Newsom lied about consulting with Trump prior to the troop deployment. The lawsuit further alleges that the network bolstered this claim by circulating an edited video of Trump designed to mislead viewers. The hefty $787 million price tag is a clear message, echoing the substantial $787.5 million settlement Fox News was forced to pay Dominion Voting Systems in a similar defamation case last year.

Predictably, Fox News has already countered, characterizing the lawsuit as an audacious attack on their enshrined First Amendment rights. “Gov. Newsom’s transparent publicity stunt is frivolous and designed to chill free speech critical of him,” a network spokesperson boldly stated to The National News Desk Friday. “We will defend this case vigorously and look forward to it being dismissed.”

However, Newsom remains unyielding. He has consistently decried Trump’s narrative that the two were aligned on the decision to deploy troops to California. In a recent interview on The New York Times podcast, Newsom unequivocally declared his intent to defend his version of events, pulling no punches in his assessment of the former president. “He lied, on my mother and dad’s grave,” Newsom asserted, his voice charged with conviction. “I don’t mess around when I say this. He lied. Stone cold liar.”

This legal salvo is not Newsom’s first confrontation with the Trump administration. He previously initiated legal action to force the withdrawal of troops from Los Angeles, demonstrating a consistent willingness to challenge Trump’s policies and rhetoric.

This latest lawsuit marks a significant escalation in the ongoing feud between Newsom and Trump, and his media allies. With Newsom widely considered a leading contender for the 2028 Democratic presidential nomination – though he has yet to formally announce any plans to seek the White House – this legal battle is being viewed as a strategic maneuver to solidify his image as a staunch defender of truth and a fearless opponent of disinformation.
