Vicksburg, MS – A political firestorm is erupting in Vicksburg as the Board of Mayor and Aldermen voted to slash the mayor’s annual salary by nearly $20,000 in what critics are calling a blatant act of political sabotage just weeks before a change in leadership. The controversial ordinance, approved a mere two weeks before outgoing Mayor George Flaggs, Jr. is set to leave office, has sparked outrage and accusations of dirty politics.

Incoming Democratic Mayor Willis Thompson, who narrowly defeated Flaggs by a mere 61 votes in the June 3rd general election, has condemned the move as a spiteful parting shot. “It’s no surprise when a defeated politician drops a stink bomb on their way out the door, but it still leaves a mess to be cleaned up,” Thompson stated on Monday. “I’m focused on issues like eliminating our $1.5 million garbage deficit and cleaning up our streets so local businesses can thrive, but this makes things even more difficult.”

During the tense board meeting, Flaggs reportedly stated that he was content securing his “high four” – a reference to maximizing his state retirement benefits by ensuring his compensation remains high during his final years in office. In a seemingly dismissive gesture, Flaggs also alluded to redirecting the $20,000 cut towards a city youth program, but then retorted, “I’m not going to do that because I’m not going to be here.”

This statement, combined with the timing of the vote, has fueled speculation that the salary reduction is a calculated attempt to undermine the incoming Thompson administration. Thompson, who will officially take office on July 1st, the day after Flaggs’ last pay period, believes the ordinance demonstrates a profound lack of integrity on the part of the outgoing administration.

“As mayor, I will focus on solutions to our problems, not petty politics at the 11th hour after already being defeated in an election,” Thompson asserted. “It’s time to restore integrity to our budgeting process, support our city employees, and deliver the services Vicksburg residents expect and deserve.”

The question now is whether this last-minute maneuver will significantly impact Thompson’s ability to implement his agenda and address the pressing issues facing Vicksburg. As the city prepares for a new chapter, the lingering scent of political maneuvering threatens to cast a shadow over the transition of power and the future of Vicksburg. The coming weeks will reveal whether Thompson can overcome this obstacle and deliver on his promises to the residents of Vicksburg.
