New Park to Bring Recreational Opportunities to Mobile Lewis Landing

Mobile, AL – A groundbreaking ceremony was held on Wednesday for Lewis Landing Park, a new 2-acre park that will provide residents with a new access point to Three Mile Creek for kayaking and fishing. The park, located on Conception Street Road, will feature a kayak launch, pavilions, fishing piers, green space, and parking.

The project was spearheaded by Mobile County Commissioner Merceria Ludgood, who discovered the property while driving by and noticing a “for sale” sign. The Mobile County Commission purchased the land for $40,000 using GOMESA grant funds. The total construction cost is expected to be just over $800,000, also funded by GOMESA money, with construction anticipated to take around 6 months.

Commissioner Ludgood highlighted the park’s significance to the Africatown community, founded by survivors of the last slave ship, the Clotilda. “It’s always been a destination,” she said, noting that residents already use the area for fishing and other activities. The new park will provide a safe and protected space for these activities, complete with amenities.

Lewis Landing Park is expected to become a popular spot for outdoor enthusiasts in Mobile County, offering opportunities for kayaking, fishing, and community gatherings.
