MOBILE, Ala.  (BuzzReport)— A 39-year-old man is facing a series of serious felony charges following a high-speed pursuit and a subsequent narcotics investigation that authorities say uncovered multiple illegal drugs and evidence of trafficking.

According to deputies with the Mobile County Sheriff’s Office Narcotics and Vice Unit, the incident unfolded around 3 p.m. on Wednesday, April 8, at a residence located at 2654 North Harbor Drive. Investigators had been conducting surveillance at the home as part of an ongoing narcotics investigation targeting James Stephen “Butte” Russell.

Authorities said deputies observed Russell leaving the residence and began following his vehicle. During that time, investigators noted several traffic violations, including failure to signal and illegal window tint, prompting deputies to initiate a traffic stop.

However, officials say Russell refused to comply. Instead, he allegedly fled the scene in a white Dodge Charger, leading law enforcement on a high-speed chase through Mobile. During the pursuit, Russell is accused of throwing narcotics out of the passenger-side window while accelerating at dangerous speeds, actions investigators say showed a disregard for public safety.

The pursuit came to an end at the intersection of Halls Mill Road and Rangeline Road when Russell’s vehicle collided with another car. The driver of the other vehicle sustained injuries, though authorities described them as non-life-threatening.

Russell was taken into custody at the scene without further incident.

Following the arrest, deputies executed a search at the North Harbor Drive residence. During that search, investigators reported discovering fentanyl and cocaine, along with a significant quantity of marijuana. Authorities also indicated that evidence consistent with drug distribution was recovered.

Russell now faces multiple charges, including felony attempting to elude law enforcement, trafficking fentanyl, possession of cocaine with intent to distribute, possession of methamphetamine with intent to distribute, first-degree possession of marijuana, tampering with physical evidence, resisting arrest, and possession of drug paraphernalia.

Officials have not released additional details regarding the extent of the narcotics recovered or whether further arrests are expected.

The investigation remains ongoing.
