Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) — The long-anticipated opening of Mobile’s new international airport has been pushed back once again, with officials now targeting an early 2027 launch following delays tied to construction timelines, supply chain uncertainties, and airline scheduling constraints. At Wednesday’s meeting of the Mobile Airport Authority, board chairman and former mayor Sandy Stimpson confirmed that while major construction is nearing completion, several critical components may not arrive in time to meet earlier projections. “Substantially, we expect to be complete by September,” Stimpson said. “However, there are long-lead items that could still be outstanding—jetways, the baggage claim system, or even disruptions tied to a potential federal shutdown. Those factors are difficult to predict at this stage.” Even if construction milestones are met this fall, operational considerations are further complicating the timeline. According to Stimpson, airlines have made it clear they prefer not to begin service during the busy holiday travel window. “They do not want you to open between November 1 and January 1,” he explained, describing the period as a “blackout window” for new route launches and operational transitions. As a result, airport officials now acknowledge that passenger service will not begin until after the start of the new year—effectively shifting the opening into 2027. When asked directly whether that means a 2027 debut, Stimpson confirmed the revised expectation. “Yes, we are,” he said. Stimpson also noted that the board expects to have a clearer and more definitive timeline following its May meeting, when officials anticipate better insight into construction progress and outstanding equipment deliveries. In an on-the-ground visit, BuzzReport staff observed no active construction at the new airport site on Palm Sunday. The site appeared idle, with no workers or equipment in operation at the time of the visit. The observation stands in contrast to previous statements from project leaders indicating that hundreds of construction workers had been hired and that work would continue around the clock to complete the multimillion-dollar development. The lack of visible activity raises new questions about the pace of progress and whether additional delays could emerge. It remains unclear whether the pause was temporary, related to scheduling, or indicative of broader slowdowns in the construction process. Additional concerns are also beginning to surface regarding leadership stability within the project. Questions have been raised about the number of leadership changes in the airport director position and whether those transitions have contributed to shifting timelines and evolving project details. With each new director taking office, revised projections and new information about the airport have followed, prompting speculation about continuity in planning and execution. Some observers are also questioning whether there are internal challenges within the board that have not been fully communicated to the public. While no specific issues have been confirmed, the pattern of changes and delays has led to increased scrutiny and calls for greater transparency. Despite the delay, airport leaders maintain that the decision reflects a deliberate effort to avoid operational disruptions. The transition from Mobile Regional Airport to the new Mobile International Airport is expected to be complex, involving coordination with airlines, federal agencies, and ground services. Officials emphasized that ensuring a smooth, reliable launch is a higher priority than adhering to an earlier, less certain opening date. The new airport project has been closely watched as a major infrastructure investment for the region, expected to expand air service options and support economic growth along the Gulf Coast.
