Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) — A man accused in the fatal shooting of his ex-girlfriend is now hospitalized after being attacked while in custody at a Mobile County detention facility, authorities confirmed.
Desmond Longmire, 39, was transported to a local hospital following an altercation inside the jail involving multiple inmates. According to preliminary information, the individuals involved in the attack were acquaintances of the victim, identified as Sheanaka Poindexter.
Jail officials have not released the extent of Longmire’s injuries but confirmed that the incident is under investigation. It remains unclear how the confrontation began or what security measures were in place at the time of the assault.
Longmire had been in custody in connection with the fatal shooting of Poindexter, which occurred in the early morning hours of Saturday, March 21. Officers with the Mobile Police Department responded to a call around 12:30 a.m. at a residence in the 5400 block of Vienna Avenue, where they discovered Poindexter suffering from a gunshot wound. She was pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigators have indicated that the shooting stemmed from a domestic-related incident. Longmire was later identified as the primary suspect and taken into custody without incident prior to the jail assault.
The attack inside the jail has raised concerns about inmate safety and the management of individuals involved in high-profile or emotionally charged cases. Corrections officials have not said whether Longmire was housed in a general population unit or if any disciplinary actions have been taken against those involved in the incident.
Authorities continue to investigate both the homicide and the in-custody assault. Additional charges could be filed in connection with the jail attack as officials work to determine the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
Anyone with information related to the shooting is urged to contact the Mobile Police Department or submit anonymous tips through local Crime Stoppers.
