Saraland, AL (BuzzReport) — A Saraland man is facing new felony charges after authorities say he once again damaged property inside a local detention facility, marking the third such incident in the past six years.

According to Saraland police, 48-year-old Michael Cook has been charged with two counts of destruction of state property by an inmate. He was booked into Mobile Metro Jail on Tuesday afternoon following allegations that he broke both a security camera and a light fixture while in custody at the Saraland jail.

Officials say the latest incident is part of a pattern of similar behavior. Sgt. Devon O’Shea reported that just last month, Cook allegedly tore down another security camera after being arrested on a public intoxication charge.

Court records further indicate that Cook has a prior history involving similar offenses. In 2020, he was charged with destroying state property after allegedly damaging a camera inside the Saraland jail. That case resulted in a guilty plea in 2022 to second-degree criminal mischief. He was initially sentenced to one year of formal probation, which was later reduced to informal probation after approximately four months.

Authorities have not released additional details regarding the most recent incident, and it remains unclear whether further charges may be filed. The case underscores ongoing concerns about repeated property damage within correctional facilities and the challenges of managing repeat offenders.
