Pensacola, FL (BuzzReport)- The 2026 Visit Pensacola Sun Belt Men’s Basketball Championship tips off March 3 at the Pensacola Bay Center, with 14 teams battling for the league’s automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament. This year’s regular season concluded with Troy earning the No. 1 seed, followed closely by a cluster of contenders.

Unlike most conferences with straightforward brackets, the Sun Belt uses a unique stepladder format that rewards higher seeds with fewer games — a factor that can significantly impact who emerges as champion.

Top Contenders to Win It All

Troy (No. 1 Seed)

The Trojans enter as the de facto favorite based on regular-season performance. They finished 12-6 in league play to grab the top seed, and their strong metrics (including the highest Simple Rating System in the league) reflect consistent offense and defense throughout the season.

Why they could win:

  • Top seed offers strategic advantage in tournament flow
  • Balanced scoring attack with strong inside play

Marshall (No. 2 Seed)

Marshall secured the No. 2 seed on tiebreakers and has played some of its best basketball late in the season. While not as dominant statistically as Troy, the Herd’s rhythm and position near the top make them a legitimate title threat.

Why they could win:

  • High efficiency offense
  • Favorable bracket position

South Alabama (No. 6 Seed)

Finished the regular season strong (21-10 overall) and will be dangerous if they hit their stride in Pensacola. As one of the league’s veteran squads, the Jaguars can’t be discounted — especially in a wide-open field.

Why they could win:

  • Experienced roster with capable scorers
  • Has beaten several tournament teams during the season

Other Dark Horses

Teams like Coastal CarolinaAppalachian State, and Arkansas State sit near the top of the standings and could make noise with an upset or two thanks to the tournament’s unusual ladder format. Depth and momentum will be crucial for these squads.

What the Numbers Suggest

While the preseason favorite entering 2025-26 had been James Madison — based on coaches’ voting — the regular season didn’t ultimately go in JMU’s favor, and they’re slotted as a lower seed this week.

The reality this season: there was no clear runaway favorite — multiple teams held legitimate claims to the top through February, and several finished within a game of each other in the standings. That parity makes the tournament particularly unpredictable and exciting.

Tournament Factors to Watch

Seeding advantage: Higher seeds in the Sun Belt format not only get easier paths but also fewer elimination games — a big deal in a compressed schedule.

Upset potential: Last season and others in recent years have shown that lower seeds can wreak havoc, especially when the margin between teams is thin.

Star performers: Teams with efficient scoring threats and senior leadership will have an edge in close games.

Final Prediction

If you’re projecting based on regular-season play and bracket advantageTroy remains the favorite to capture the Sun Belt Tournament crown. But Marshall and South Alabama are not far behind, and a timely run from a lower seed could easily upend expectations — making this one of the more unpredictable league tournaments in mid-major college basketball this season.
