Mobile, AL (BuzzReport) — A Tuesday afternoon disturbance on St. Stephens Road ended in tragedy, leaving an 81-year-old man dead and a 60-year-old suspect behind bars as investigators work to piece together the moments that led to the fatal encounter.

Police were dispatched to the 2300 block of St. Stephens Road around 1:35 p.m. on December 23 after receiving a report of an assault. When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man unresponsive in a parking lot. Emergency responders rushed him to a nearby hospital, but despite medical efforts, he later died from his injuries.

Investigators determined that the victim had been involved in a physical altercation with another man shortly before officers arrived. The confrontation unfolded in the parking lot, drawing swift law enforcement attention once the severity of the situation became clear.

The victim was identified as Charles Edward, 81, whose death has shaken the surrounding community and raised questions about how a routine afternoon escalated into a fatal incident.

Sammy Tate, 60, was taken into custody and transported to Metro Jail as the investigation continues. Authorities have not released additional details about the circumstances leading up to the altercation, indicating that the case remains active.
